ASE Certification & practice test related questions

Can I get ASE Certified without work experience?

Anyone can take an ASE exam/test. However, if you don't have a miniumum of 1 year of work experience, you won't be certified when you pass the test. Formal automotive education can substitute for a certain level of work experience. See the options on this page published on the ASE website. For those wanting to become an ASE Certified technician, we recommend that you receive formal training/education. If you don't have any experience, we suggest taking the G1 test. Once you pass, you can take your test scores to an automotive repair shop. They will be more likely to hire you if you show them you've already passed your first test. You can then get your work experience and start getting your certifications towards becoming ASE Master Certified.

How long should I study?

Studies show that the more time you invest in studying and practicing, the better the outcome. This is true of many things but especially true of taking the ASE test. This is why we require you to take and pass at least 7 timed and 7 untimed ASE practice tests to qualify for our guarantee. Don’t make the same mistake some technicians do by signing up for a subscription a few days before you take the official ASE test and only taking a few practice tests. It’s highly likely that you won’t pass. We also suggest you do not take more than 2 practice tests in any given day. Too much information at once is a bad thing. It's like the old saying that you can't eat an elephant in one big bite, it takes many small bites. Keep this in mind when you plan your ASE test preparation time.

To increase your chances of success we recommend the following strategy:

  1. Take our untimed tests until you can pass at least 7 times in a row with at least a 70% score. Don't rush, but read and understand the explanations at the end of each question.
  2. Take our timed tests until you can pass at least 7 times in a row with at least a 70% score.
  3. If you fail even one practice test along the way, start the process over from the beginning.
  4. Continue to take timed ASE practice tests right up until you take your actual ASE test. It doesn't cost any more to take more tests so you might as well use your subscription.
  5. Don't take more than 2 practice tests on any given day. Take a 1-day break in between practice tests. This gives you a chance to continue to think about the tests from the previous day, and study/look up information you are not quite sure about.

Are your questions the same as the official ASE test?

Our questions are not a copy of the official ASE Certification test questions. We hire automotive education and industry experts to write questions designed to simulate the same problems and challenges contained in the official ASE test. Our practice test questions are very similar to the ASE test and if you study our explanations for correct and incorrect answers, you will know the material and be able to recall it during your ASE test.

Purchasing a subscription and account related questions

Why not buy DVD study material?

Each year, our automotive test writing experts retake all the ASE tests we offer in order to learn what has changed from the previous year. We rewrite, remove, or add new questions to mimic the material that is being asked on the current ASE tests. Not only are DVD ASE study programs very expensive to purchase, but they are outdated almost as soon as you get them. Also, most new computers don't even have DVD readers in them. The DVD's have probably been sitting in a warehouse for at least a year. This could prove to be a bad combination for you and may hinder your ability to easily pass your ASE tests.

Do I really get access to everything on the website with any subscription?

Yes! Each and every subscription from 30-days through 365-days get full access to all of our ASE practice tests. That's one of the things that sets us apart from the crowd. No need to buy access to each ASE area separately. Many technicians take more than one ASE test at a time and our service allows them to prepare to do this without the additional cost or aggravation of having to make separate purchases that end up costing much more in the end.

Where are all the practice tests?

When you log into your account, you are taken directly to your Welcome page with your account profile information. Look for a menu page named Paid ASE Tests. Remember to log out of the system when you have finished taking your ASE practice tests. Logging out will help eliminate too many simultaneous logins to your account which may lock you out of your account.

Which subscription is perfect for me?

You can choose any subscription you feel most comfortable with. This guide is simply our recommendations based on how our ASE practice test service works.

365-day subscription: Preparing to take more than 6 ASE tests over the next 12-months. Also great for shops to keep an account that their team can take turns using throughout the year.

180-day subscription: Preparing to take 4 to 6 ASE tests over the next 6-months.

120-day subscription: Preparing to take 3 to 5 ASE tests over the next 4-months.

90-day subscription: Preparing to take 2 to 3 ASE tests over the next 3-months.

60-day subscription: Preparing to take 1 to 2 ASE tests over the next 2-months.

30-day subscription: Preparing to take 1 ASE tests in about a month.

How many different devices can I use to access the tests?

The quick answer is as many different devices as you would like to use. Our website and tests are designed to be compatible with all computers, smartphones and tablets. Signing up on a specific device does not mean that you can only use that device throughout your subscription. We're ready for you wherever, whenever, and however you need us to be.

Why am I not getting my test scores sent to my email?

An email confirmation/receipt should immediately arrive right after you sign up. Your test scores are also sent as soon as you complete a test. If these emails are not making it to you, there are a few possible reasons. First, when you signed up, you may have entered an invalid email account, or your email inbox may be full. To verify your email address, log into your account and review your email address in your profile information. If your email address is correct, then it is most likely that your email provider is blocking emails from us or that your inbox is full. You can add asetestprep.com to your approved sender list which should clear up any issues. If this still doesn't work, then you may try entering an alternate email address in your account profile on your Welcome page.

How does the Guarantee to Pass the Test work?

We're so confident that you will pass your official ASE test that if you don't pass, you may be eligible for a refund of your subscription fee, or a free extension. 30-day subscriptions are exempt from the guarantee. All other subscriptions are eligible for 60 additional days.*

Qualifying for the guarantee: You must have completed and passed (70% minimum score) at least 7 timed and 7 untimed tests in the ASE area in which you did not pass the official ASE test and are requesting an extension or refund. A practice test is not completed and registered in our system unless you click the blue "Finish Test" button at the end of the test. The 7 passing timed and untimed tests must also have been taken prior to the date that you took your failed official ASE test. Please allow 48 hours to process either of these requests. No requests will be processed without proper official ASE scores documentation. Refund or extension requests must be submitted within 30 days of taking your official ASE test.

4, 5, 6, and 12 month subscription refunds are prorated and based on the amount of time remaining on a subscription.

Refund does not apply to the cost of registering and taking an official ASE certification test.

Visit the Contact Us page to submit a request.

Is my credit card and personal information safe?

The answers are YES and YES. We've partnered with Stripe®, one of the best and most secure credit card processing companies on the internet. Since none of our subscriptions auto renew, we do not collect or store any of your credit card information. Upon payment confirmation, you can immediately log into your new account. We use SSL encryption to protect your personal information when you log into your account.

What if I pass my ASE tests before my subscription ends?

Congratulations on passing your test! This is our goal and we are very happy for you. If you pass the test early you can simply let your subscription expire. There's nothing to do. There are no pro-rated refunds for subscription time not used.

What if my subscription expires before I take my ASE test?

If your subscription expires before you're ready to take your ASE test(s), simply log into your account and visit the Buy Now page to choose the subscription plan you wish to purchase. You can also recognize if your account has expired if you log in and see the Welcome tab but not the Paid Practice Tests tab. The Paid Practice Tests tab is only visible during an active subscription period.

I was a previous customer and want to renew my subscription.

Most technicians who've used our practice tests come back when it's time to take their next ASE test. To us it's the best form of flattery and we realize that we must be doing something right. If you want to subscribe again you can use the same email address and username you used the last time you subscribed. Upon resubscribing, the first step you should do is log into your existing account. Next, visit the Buy Now page to select your new subscription level. You'll notice that all of your account information is already filled in for you and all you will have to enter is your billing/credit card info in order to complete your purchase.

How are refunds handled?

All refunds must be paid electronically to the account you used to pay for your subscription. If your payment account is no longer active, the only other option is that we will send you a postal money order. If we must send a postal money order, we will deduct a service fee of $5.00 per refund. We are an internet business and strive to handle all transactions electronically.

Why can't my subscription payment be processed?

Most subscription payments fail due to entering incorrect credit card information on the payment form. Sometimes financial institutions will simply decline a payment.

Declines can happen for a variety of reasons. When we submit a charge to your bank, they use automated systems that determine whether or not to accept the charge. These systems take various signals into account, such as your spending habits, account balance, and card information like the expiration date and CVC code on the back.

Since these signals are constantly changing, a previously successful card might be declined in the future. Even if all of the card information is correct, and you previously had a successful payment, a future charge can still be declined by a bank’s overzealous fraud systems.

If you are having trouble processing your subscription payment, we recommend using an alternate credit card. We are happy to attempt to manually process your card by calling us during normal business hours. Unfortunately we cannot accept cash, checks, or money orders as payment for your subscription.
