ASE A2 Automatic Transmission/Transaxle Test: What’s Covered + How to Prepare

The ASE A2 (Automatic Transmission/Transaxle) certification test validates your ability to diagnose shift concerns, analyze hydraulic and electronic controls, and choose the correct repair or service procedure. If your goal is to pass your ASE exam, the best approach is focused practice that mirrors ASE-style questions, real shop scenarios, and the time pressure of test day.

What’s on the ASE A2 Test?

A2 centers on real-world transmission and transaxle diagnosis and repair decisions. Common topic areas include:

  • General Transmission/Transaxle Diagnosis (symptoms, inspection, noises/vibration, scan data, fluid condition)
  • In-Vehicle Transmission/Transaxle (controls, adjustments, service procedures, drivability/shift concerns)
  • Off-Vehicle Transmission/Transaxle (removal/installation, teardown/inspection, assembly, component checks)

Time matters. The A2 certification exam is commonly presented as 60 total questions (50 scored + 10 research questions) with 75 minutes allowed.
